I resisted the gym because of the stigma, but I have to say I am really enjoying it. The first class I took was Spinning, Thursday morning from 9a-10a. It’s pretty straightforward. You ride a stationary bike to good music for an hour. I was told I could quit at the halfway point, but that just challenged me to stay the whole time. It’s about 10 of us in a small room specifically for Spinning, loud music and an instructor facing us and shouting things like, “Take it to a 5! Seagulls! Counting down to Sprints! You can do it! Dig deep!” I liked it. I looked at the clock only ten minutes in and had kind of a panic moment, Spinning is hard! I pushed through and at 930a a few people left, but I stayed and a funny thing happened. I hit my groove. I didn’t go crazy because I still need to do things like walk afterwards, so the last half of the class I was a bit at my own pace, but I never stopped and I didn’t fall off the bike, so goals met! My booty was sore for a few days (TMI-sorry!), but my legs felt pretty good. I used my free smoothie coupon from signing up on Wednesday for a Mango Tango afterwards and it was delicious! I might would go in there just for a smoothie!
On Friday I tried Tabata. It was explained to me that it was only 30 minutes because it burned as many calories as a one hour class due to it’s “high intensity training”. I still didn’t know what to expect, but after trying karate with a bunch of guys and feeling pretty silly, my confidence level is pretty high. The class was in the small training studio and was all women of all sizes and skill level. We did various exercises with weights and gliders in 30 second burst and 10 second rests. I felt pretty good after, but considered it a so-so workout. Today, however, I am so sore! I guess I worked my muscles a bit harder than I thought! lol It’s Saturday and I was a little sad this morning that I would not be going to the gym. I consider that a good sign.
Next week I am set up to do Zumba, Spinning again, my personal trainer hour/orientation, yoga and a core conditioning class on Friday. I’m pretty excited about it. On Friday when I told Lorelei we were going to the gym she said, “yay!”. I hope she continues to enjoy it as much as I am.
